GRAND RAPIDS — The stone hall at Otsego Park has a new name. At Monday’s meeting the Wood County Park District Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name the building the Thompson Stone Hall at Otsego Park in honor for former board chair George Thompson. Thompson served on the board for nearly 25 years, stepping down last year. “George saw this park district through a lot of things, a lot of growth,” said Park Director Neil Munger prior to the vote. Thompson, who was present at the meeting and teared up after the announcement, said he had no idea that the board was going to take this action. “I’m truly overwhelmed. I’m in tears,” he said. “I truly am flabbergasted.” Thompson additionally applauded the board for an action taken earlier in the meeting, the approval of a merit pay system for park district employees. “I’m glad to see you move forward with something the employees can get a handle on,” he said. The board approved the plan 4-0, with member Mary Krueger absent.
The plan is not in a final state, however, and it became clear during a discussion lasting more than 30 minutes on the subject that certain elements of the plan, including the various “steps” in the merit awards and also the suggested inclusion of a cost of living increase, would be discussed and finalized as the details mature.
