Wood County's first baby of the year was born amidst the swirling snowdrifts and frosty temperatures of the first big snowstorm of the winter.
Both debuted in the wee hours of Thursday, after nearly 12 hours of build-up, but unlike droves of area drivers trying to get to work or appointments, little Avery Pearl Jackson arrived warmly, smoothly and without harm.
Stacy and Bill Jackson of Deshler welcomed their daughter at 4:45 a.m. Jan. 2 at Wood County Hospital. Delivered by Dr. Ian Leggat, Avery weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces.
Stacy says her due date was not until Jan. 7, but her doctor decided to induce her labor.
The couple initially had plans for New Year's Eve that involved going out to dinner with another couple who recently had a baby of their own "but we decided we'd better not." Instead, the mother-to-be opted to rest while she could.
Upon arrival at the hospital "they said we might be" winners of the first-baby-of-the-year competition, which yields bragging rights as well as a savings bond for the infant. "But we were not really expecting to" since her labor wasn't started until nearly supper time on New Year's Day.

Fortunately, "that was before the weather got bad" so making it to the hospital in Bowling Green from their farm on Road D in Henry County was not the trial it would have become a few hours later.
On the other hand, Bill didn't get as good a night's sleep as he had expected to.
"The plan was that he was going to go home," she noted, "but he ended up staying at the hospital" overnight.
Little Avery is the couple's firstborn child and mom, who is 31, couldn't be more excited.
A 2001 graduate of Otsego High School who grew up in Grand Rapids, the former Stacy Clark was herself born at Wood County Hospital.
She and Bill, a full-time farmer and Patrick Henry graduate, were married in November 2011.
She has been employed as a receptionist at the Bowling Green Clinic for the past two years.
The couple said they named their daughter for Stacy's grandfather Clark, whose first name was Pearl.
So far, the baby's disposition seems to be "pretty calm," say the new parents, which is how they hope the weather will be by the time they make the drive home to Deshler with their precious cargo this weekend.
