PERRYSBURG - A new medical center opened Monday to expand emergency care options in northern Wood County.
Mercy Medical Center, built over the last year at a cost of more than $13 million, is the region's first facility to offer hospital-quality emergency care without being connected to a hospital. Dr. Chris Goliver, medical director, said Mercy Medical Center can provide all the emergency attention one would receive at a community hospital, such as lab work. Before Mercy Medical Center opened, there were few options in the northern part of the county.
"We provide hospital-quality ER services close to home," he said.
People suffering anything from heart attacks and strokes to sports injuries and respiratory problems can now visit the center, located at 12621 Eckel Junction Road near Ohio 25. If hospital admission is necessary, patients will be treated and stabilized before being transported to an appropriate hospital.
The medical center has helicopter access, a dozen exam rooms and a wide range of imaging capabilities, as well as the state's first MR Caring Suite, the hospital's "wow factor" which allows patients to experience reduced stress during MRI testing with a wider machine and by selecting calming scenery, video and music, Goliver said.
Whether it's a mountain or beach scene, patients can use an iPad to select the options that create the most relaxing environment for them.
"You can tailor the room to match the person's personality," Goliver said.
"It's something you have to experience."
