Bowling Green State University and Wood County Hospital (WCH) have signed an agreement for the creation of the Falcon Health Center, a new University health center that will be operated by the hospital and replace the present Student Health Services building on campus. The new facility will be located at the corner of East Wooster Street and South College Drive.
"We're pleased and excited about this partnership with Wood County Hospital and what it will mean for our students," said BGSU President Mary Ellen Mazey.
"This new facility will enhance student health care, increase efficiency and benefit the broader community."
"Wood County Hospital takes care of many students and University staff in our hospital and clinics. Partnering with the University will help enhance campus-based service delivery and improve continuity of care," said WCH President Stan Korducki. "We look forward to having a 21st century facility to support care for the BGSU students, faculty and staff."
Wood County Hospital was selected through a competitive proposal process involving a number of University offices and constituencies, including BGSU students.
Construction is expected to begin this month with the goal of opening by the fall 2013 semester. Until then, the existing BGSU Student Health Services will continue to operate at its present location.
BGSU students provided input at every stage in the process. Project architects consulted with student focus groups and will use their feedback in designing the health center.
The facility is expected to be two stories high, around 21,000 square feet and will complement the campus buildings across Wooster Street as well as the surrounding residential neighborhood.
The first floor will have waiting and reception rooms, and business and consultation offices. Patient care functions include lab/blood draw, an X-ray room and holding area, changing room, pharmacy, approximately 16 exam rooms, procedure rooms, an IV area, wellness and patient education rooms, and a nurse station.
Parking for patients, visitors and staff is expected to be onsite and adjacent to the building.
All the services provided at the former BGSU Student Health Services will be provided at the Falcon Health Center.

Do we need to have 6 months of council meetings for residents to complain about this?

Wow I would rather have the 100 faculty than a new Health Ctr... Wood Co Hospital is going to run it... That is a scary thought..BGSU needs to ask students who are paying what they want.. I am here for an education.. I Have insurance and so do all the others students so if I need medical asst. I can go to a hospital of my choice... Geesh BGSU Please get it together for us students ....

A nice touch would have been to put the chimney flourish on the side of the building.

The university ought to establish a proper website to share planned changes and such.

I'm glad to see that this lot will NOT remain vacant! I was devastated when they tore down the beautiful Popular Culture House. I hope they put a memorial to the Popular Culture House in the lobby. Maybe a plaque with a photo of the house and a summation of its history. It would be a nice gesture on Mazey's part. Her reputation among students and community members is TERRIBLE (due to the POPC House and many other short-sighted actions, including the 100 faculty cuts she announced last week). . . maybe a gesture like this could help?

Pop culture house was a dump, glad it's gone. It will be nice to see something new there that can be useful to the University community.

John, that was extremely rude. Just because the internet is anonymous doesn't give you permission to dismiss common decency. Saying the Popular Culture House "was a dump" was a nasty remark intended to hurt the many people you know cared about it. Statements intended to hurt people = bullying. Online bullying is a major societal problem we're having in this country. People like you make polarizing and ill-informed statements in the same manner as a schoolyard bully (and I'm guessing you're old enough to know better.) Don't say "I'm entitled to my opinion" - there are many ways to express your statement without being rude. Also, be fair, the POPC House was NOT a dump. It was a well-preserved piece of American and intellectual history and it is greatly missed by both the BGSU and BG community. In this life, kindness matters. Remember that.

I forget did it have a historic marker? Or was it or of those treasures that was only a treasure once the bulldozer was in front of it?

It qualified to be on the National Registry of Historic Places, but BGSU officials needed to sign off on the application and they refused. So yes, by all rights it should have had a historic marker since the 1990s (when the application was filed), but it was blocked by the powers that be. To reiterate, the registration process was started long before the demolition was announced. After the razing plans were made public, innumerable architects, historians, and kit-house experts contacted BGSU President Mazey to endorse preserving the home. Sadly, they were all ignored. It's a terrible shame.

I'm looking at a google map of BG. I realize this is on the site where the Pop Culture house once sat. The question haunting me is, how will it fit? Where are they gonna put a parking lot? Doesn't look like enough room to me. Am I missing something?

A University is a living creature. You always have classic philosophical differences woven within all of this, such as athletics funding, research vs teaching balance, tearing down buildings, building new buildings etc. Students always think their priorities should dominate all decisions, even if they aren't here but a few years each. Faculty surely can guide how to develop academic departments and curriculum, but they are not the administration, nor should be. And athletics is here, it isn't going anyplace, and in my 20 years since arriving in BG, has only become more deeply rooted in alumni, development, and promotional functions of the University.

It rests with the Administration to balance all of these things, and typically no one party is ever happy. That is the way it was, the way it is, and the way it will be.
