The Bowling Green Board of Education Tuesday approved a property easement to the city for the creation of a pedestrian and bicycle trail that leads to the Community Center at the corner of Haskins and West Newton roads. The route, determined this summer, will run along the northern edge of the high and middle school property. An earlier proposal would have the route on the western edge. Board President Eric Myers said the adjusted route "makes more sense." "We will not be taking any space from our athletic facilities or from FFA," he said. Superintendent Ann McVey said that construction on the portion of the path adjacent to the school property would not start until 2015, and possibly as late as 2016. It is the last piece of the project, she said. The board's approval, according to the resolution is "contingent upon the receipt of corresponding legal documents." Also at the meeting the board approved a change order for the Crim renovation and expansion project that upgrades the flooring in the cafeteria to terrazzo tile. That's the material used in the hallways, said Kent Buehrer, of the Buehrer Group. Terrazzo tile will be more durable.
The change adds $53,868 to the project. The money comes from the project's contingency fund. Buehrer also requested several smaller change orders, with the total coming to $60,388. That brings the cost of the project, which is now in its second phase, to $4,471,958. In other action, the board: • Accepted the retirement of Eric Heestand, director of building and ground, effective, Dec. 31. • Renewed the contract of Performing Arts Center manager Carmen Rowlands and made the position full time. She assumes duties performed by another part-time employee who has taken another job with the district.
