N.Baltimore to send home spring break blizzard bags

NORTH BALTIMORE – School district administrators have announced plans to make up lost days due to
inclement weather, and it might take some of the fun out of spring break.
At Tuesday’s board of education meeting, Superintendent Marlene North announced that teachers for all
grades have put together three "blizzard bags" for students to complete while on spring break.

Spring break runs from March 31 to April 4.
North stressed while students will not be in school during that week, students will be expected to
complete the take-home and online homework.
The district has missed 13 days of school due to bad weather. The state forgives the first five, and
earlier this month forgave four more as long as districts makes up four.
North Baltimore also will add one day to the school calendar, making May 30 the last day for students.

North said if four more days are missed, they will be forgiven by the state.
High School Principal Bob Falkenstein said he was hugged when he told seniors they will graduate as
planned and won’t need to return to school after the ceremony. Seniors’ last day is May 23.
North also added that the district does utilize three-hour delays and may use them this spring if
necessary to keep from canceling another more school days.
She also reported that seven finalists will be invited this week to interview for the superintendent’s
position.
The district received 21 applications. The plan is to narrow down the candidate pool to two to four.
North will retire June 30.
Also at the meeting, the board:
• Learned that Falkenstein will hold a meeting for parents and the community April 17 at 7 p.m. in the
auditeria to discuss adjusting the way that grade point averages are calculated, thus impacting how
valedictorians, salutatorians and the top 10 percent are selected. Also discussed will be possible
changes to the high school honor roll system. "We’re very strong academically but we need to
strengthen our standards," he said.
• Hired Robert Luderman as athletic director at a salary of $13,110.
• Accepted resignations from Jon Eicher, varsity boys basketball coach, and Greg Frost, varsity girls
basketball coach.
