NORTH BALTIMORE - Some village departments were infused with more money to operate with through the year's end following a special council meeting Tuesday. By a vote of 5-1, village council members approved $201,791 in supplemental appropriations for various village departments and projects to finish out the year. Councilwoman Leslee Thompson voted against the legislation. She said she supported funding some of the projects and expenditures, but not all. "I just disagree with the amount of carry-over we are dipping into for some of the projects," Thompson said after the meeting. One of the largest expenditures, $42,000, was earmarked for moving forward with the village's share of its downtown revitalization project. Another $42,757 was put toward street improvements. New machinery to be used by the wastewater department, totaling $22,365, was also part of the supplemental appropriations.
Other appropriations included $15,000 to put in reserve for a police car, $15,000 for house demolition, repairs to concession stands and shelter houses, purchase of a bucket truck, street signs, among others expenditures. Mayor Mike Julien said the supplemental appropriations came after some departments' budgets were "gutted" at the beginning of the year to help balance finances. However, Julien said, the projected carry-over allowed the village to pull some more money to give back to these departments.
