PERRYSBURG — Two area musical ensembles will celebrate milestones in the historic setting of Fort Meigs during Melodies on the Maumee concert Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The concert will feature the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra and The GLASSMEN drum and bugle corps. Both ensembles are celebrating their 50th anniversaries, and the concert will commemorate the beginning of the War of 1812. The concert will be held picnic style, so the audience is encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and food. Both groups will perform individual sets then join together for a grand finale. In the afternoon before the concert, War of 1812 soldiers will provide hands-on activities for the kids and weapons demonstration. Members of The GLASSMEN will have musical stations set up within the fort leading up to the concert.
The orchestra will perform Aaron Copland’s “An Outdoor Overture,” “An Armed Forces Salute,” John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever” and Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” The Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1961, under the guidance of founder Juliet Beck and its first conductor, Frank Menichetti, and achieved symphony status by 1970. For more than 15 years, The GLASSMEN has been a finalist at the annual Drum Corps International World Championships. The drum corps has had been a featured ensemble at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and performed with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Hills Symphony and Lima Symphony. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and includes admission to the afternoon activities at the fort. Online: www.fortmeigs.org
