Jan Larson McLaughlin
Jan Larson McLaughlin has been named editor of the Sentinel-Tribune.
She will fill the editor's seat vacated when long-time editor David C. Miller died on May 18.
"We're happy to announce Jan has become editor," said Karmen Concannon, publisher of the Sentinel. "And we're thrilled that we could promote from within and look forward to the changes that she'll bring to the newspaper."
McLaughlin has worked for the Sentinel-Tribune for 29 years, the last 23 as county editor. In that role, she covered county government, issues affecting county residents, and personal stories about local citizens.
Recently, McLaughlin covered the Bowling Green State University beat.
She has earned 19 Associated Press awards in annual statewide competitions. Those awards were for news writing, breaking news, feature writing, headline writing, page design and community service reporting. McLaughlin has been honored four times as best news writer of the year for newspapers of similar circulations in the state.
Earlier this month, McLaughlin earned first place in Ohio as best news writer for the year for her stories on a local family's foreclosure, a woman faking cancer, citizens tackling a purse thief, and a series of stories on child abuse. She also won first place as best headline writer.
Last year, she received a three-year fellowship from the Inland Press Association, which helps newspapers and the industry at large thrive in their business performance, their journalism quality and their ability to respond to changes in the media environment.
McLaughlin, who has a bachelor's degree in journalism from Bowling Green State University, started out as a photojournalist and reporter.
Over the years, she has taught several journalism classes at BGSU.
She was named BG Woman of the Year in 2002 by the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce because of her work in journalism and volunteer efforts in the community.
McLaughlin, a native of Pemberville, lives in Bowling Green with her husband Frank. She has two daughters, Allie Larson, Bowling Green, and Anna Walden, Kansas, and two step-children, Tom and Annie McLaughlin, both of California.
