CUSTAR – A Wednesday
shooting in the village that sent one man to a Toledo hospital may be related to a recent home
foreclosure.Thomas J. Boyer, 53, Custar, was arrested on a charge of attempted murder after reportedly
shooting William Henry Morris, 42, Rutland, with a shotgun outside of Boyer’s residence, 22743 Defiance
Pike. Morris was taken to University of Toledo Medical Center via air ambulance and was listed in
serious condition yesterday. An update to his condition was not available this morning. He sustained a
single shotgun wound to the back, and only one shot was reportedly fired in the incident.Sheriff Mark
Wasylyshyn said this morning that Morris is believed to be an employee with a bank. Boyer’s residence,
valued at $42,000, is scheduled for a sheriff’s sale on Jan. 2.Court records show that an order to
foreclose the property was issued Sept. 18. OneWest Bank, Irvine, Calif., which has offices in Ohio, was
a plaintiff in the case.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office received report of the shooting just after
1 p.m., stating that a person had been shot on Route 281, also called Defiance Pike, which runs
east-west through the village.Upon the arrival of a deputy to the scene, Boyer reportedly still had the
shotgun in his possession, and the deputy held him at gunpoint prior to his arrest.Boyer’s home is
located across the street from St. Louis Catholic School. Wasylyshyn said that the school was not
involved in the incident, and the shooter did not make any moves towards the school building. As a
precaution, school officials were notified of the shooting by the Sheriff’s Office, and the school was
locked down according to emergency procedures to reduce the risk to children and teachers present. The
school was reportedly out of lockdown by 2 p.m.The shooting remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s
Office, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification, and the Wood County Prosecutor’s
Office.
