The gates of the 2014 Wood County Fair opened this morning as the annual gala at the corner of Poe and
Haskins roads began its eight-day run.
The fairgrounds was bustling with people all weekend as barns filled with livestock; concessionaires were
setting up their trailers and booths, and the amusement rides were being set up.
In addition to the livestock, the Syrian brown bears which will be part of the Bear Mountain midway show
arrived on Sunday. FFA and 4-H projects and displays filled the Junior Fair Building.
Displays and entries were exhibited and judged in both the Fine Arts and Home and Garden World buildings.

The campgrounds were filling up as families set up their temporary homes for the week. In short, there
wasn’t one area of the fairgrounds without activity.
The Wood County Fair also announced a late addition to the Entertainment Tent as Wood County native
Jennifer (Harris) Trosper will give an educational and entertaining presentation at noon on Wednesday
focused on the Mars rover project.
The 1986 Elmwood High School graduate and her family are returning for a visit so she can show them her
home county fair. Trosper is deputy project manager of the Curiosity Rover, which landed nearly two
years ago to collect data on Mars.
While adults should find her talk interesting, the focus will be on youth as she shares what it takes to
build Mars rovers, as well as many things which have been learned by Curiosity in its two years at our
neighboring planet.
"Kids will even have a chance to be ‘run over’ by a mini-Mars rover during the presentation,"
Trosper promised.

She has favorable memories of her family’s years of 4-H and raising sheep, chickens and pigs at their
rural Fostoria home.
Formerly called the Free Tent, The Entertainment Tent where Trosper will hold her session is now situated
beyond the grandstands at the far west end of the track.
Those needing a ride to or from the parking lot throughout the week or to the Entertainment Tent or any
other location on the fairgrounds can call for a free golf cart shuttle courtesy of the Wood County
Sheriff’s office and Welch Golf Carts. To get a ride, flag down a cart or call 419-352-8257.
