Landfill gas collection hits glitches PDF Print E-mail

Wood County officials would like to see the methane gas from the county landfill go green - making less of an impact on the environment and generating money instead of pollution.
But glitches in contract negotiations may delay the project.
Wood County Landfill officials have agreed to collect the methane gas from the site and send it to a generator. Hull and Associates would then sell the electricity to AMP Ohio and the city of Bowling Green.
"We're dirt guys, we're not electric guys," Ken Rieman, coordinator of the Wood County Solid Waste District, explained Tuesday to the county commissioners.
A grant for $235,000 has been received by Hull and Associates from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to set up the methane gas conversion system. The grant funding hinges on the requirement that equipment for the project be on the site by Sept. 30. According to Rieman, that timeline is getting tight considering his office is still hammering out contract details with Hull and Associates.
"I hate to send money back," Rieman said of the grant.
But he added that the county must reach a suitable agreement before entering a "marriage" on the long-term methane gas collection system.
Wood County Commissioner Tim Brown said the county had hoped to be environmentally responsible rather than flaring off the methane gas from the landfill. But that might not be possible in this grant cycle, he said.
"That's better than entering into something that's not going to work," Rieman said.
The commissioners and Rieman agreed that even if this contract and grant fall through, the county remains committed to creating a methane collection program at the landfill.
"We're hoping it will go forward," Rieman said. But the contract must be fair to both parties. "This is a 20-year agreement, so you better get it right."

Since when is Mr. Rieman concerned about the details of a contract? If Mr. Rieman wan't so busy covering up contract violations he might have time to hammer out a deal and keep the grant money from being returned to the state. The commissioners need to investigate the Solid Waste District's business dealings with the Bowling Green Recycling Center and see how little Mr. Rieman cares about 'getting it right.'
