KANSAS - The Lakota Board of Education has approved a two-year contract with its Ohio Association of Public School Employees, as well as the salary schedules for non-teaching administrative employees.
The two-year agreement is effective July 1 and run through June 30, 2015, and includes 1.5 percent pay increases each year.
Jennifer Hedrick, treasurer, reported to the board at its Monday meeting that "negotiations went very, very well."
She told the board that the employees agreed to similar concessions and contract changes as the teachers. 
Among those concessions were an Increase in member contribution toward medical insurance and decreased coverage levels unless employee successfully participates in a wellness program. That wellness program was also established to reward employees for participation.
In addition, the contract added a 20-percent coinsurance payment up to a maximum of $150 per prescription for specialty drugs and must be filled at the Caremark Specialty Pharmacy except for initial prescription and emergencies.
Another change in the contract will allow sick leave for domestic partners. Other sick leave changes included allowing unused sick leave bank days to be returned to donating employees. There was also an Increase in the sick leave maximum accumulation to 245 days in the 2013-14 school  year and to 250 days in 2014-15 school year.
Language was added regarding military leave of absence.
The new superintendent, Jon C. Detwiler, oversaw his first board meeting after he was hired at a special meeting last month.
The board also approved the board policy involving positive behavior intervention and supports and limited use of restraint and seclusion. Detwiler explained to the board this is part of state guidelines noting, "I still think this is good for students."
The staff will receive training on when and how restraints can be used. He said this only applies to extreme situations, for example, if a special needs student is having some issues or a similar situation. Any separation, seclusion or restraint would only be used if it was needed for the safety of the student or others.
The board also appointed Chris Chalfin as the high school's head softball coach. Chalfin, who serves as the board president, dutifully abstained from the vote. In addition, Rebecca Chalfin was appointed as a summer intervention tutor substitute. Chalfin also abstained in that vote.
Detwiler thanked the board once again, as well as the staff, for their support.
"I have been overwhelmed by the support from everyone in the office," Detwiler said.
He also went out of his way to thank the custodians for the outstanding job they do in keeping the building clean and in top condition. "I'm having the time of my life," he said.
Also at the meeting, the board:
•    Unanimously approved other appointment for sports staff including cross country, volleyball, cheerleading, baseball and football
•    Accepted the retirement of Deborah Morehart, school nurse and appointed Elizabeth Crawford to the post at a salary of $41,950.
•    Accepted the resignations of Kelly Brickner, assistant volleyball coach; Jeremy Koppus and Linda Doering, both K-12 intervention specialists; Julie Knallay, paraprofessional; Peggy Kagy, preschool paraprofessional; and Andrea Graber, special needs paraprofessional.
•    Approved the middle/high school athletic handbook for the 2012-2014 academic year. That included the student athletic drug policy.
