MILLBURY - In honor of the 26 children and teachers who died in a Connecticut school shooting, a tree will be planted at each of the Lake Township parks.
At last week's meeting, former trustee John Welch offered to donate one of the trees. The trustees agreed to plant trees at all of the parks, including Friendship, Fireside and Moline Meadows.
"We hope that people would look upon that tree and nothing like this would ever happen again," said trustee chairwoman Melanie Bowen.
The Sandy Hook school shootings occurred last month in Newtown, Conn.
In other business at the Jan. 2 meeting, the trustees re-elected Bowen as chairwoman for 2013. Ron Sims will be vice chairman.
The board will continue meeting on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the administration building.
The zoning commission will meet the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. The zoning board of appeals will meet the third Thursday at 7 p.m.
In other business at this meeting and the Dec. 27 year-end meeting, the trustees:
• Approved a 2.5-percent increase for non-union employees for 2013. The police union employees received the same increase earlier in December, as part of their three-year contract. Bowen said the raise essentially offsets an increase in health insurance premiums.
• Approved temporary appropriations for the first 90 days of 2013 totaling $1.8 million.
• Renewed the LexisNexis Anderson's Ohio primary law CD subscription for $1,907. It provides up-to-date legal information used by township offices and departments.
• Hired Pneu-Matic Engineering Inc., Whitehouse, for $1,216 to perform systems, operation and maintenance checks and air quality sampling on the fire department air wagon. It's part of semi-annual compliant maintenance.
• Went into a 45-minute executive session to discuss police and fire personnel issues. No action was taken.
