Lake Twp. raises stink over trash collection

MILLBURY – A new trash collection company in Lake Township is off to a stinky start.
But representatives from the company who attended Tuesday’s trustees’ meeting said they were committed to
better customer service and were addressing all of the complaints.
"It’s not been the smoothest or best start," said Paul Rasmusson, senior area manager for
Republic Services.
He said drivers and dispatchers are implementing better communication strategies and will work with
residents on improving service.
"We apologize again for the missteps at the beginning," Rasmusson said.
After the meeting, Trustee Richard Welling said the complaints about Republic concerned bulk pickup,
recycling and service charges and late fees mistakenly put on bills. He had a file folder with several
emails from township residents.
Republic Services, Erie, Mich., was awarded a three-year contract last fall to provide solid waste and
recycling services to the township. The cost is $12.93 per household and the contract began Jan. 1.
The company is providing bi-weekly recycling with a 96-gallon cart at no charge to customers.
Also at the meeting, the trustees:
• authorized the final payment of $35,640 to RCC Consultants Inc., Glen Allen, Va., for the Emergency
Communications Shared Dispatching Center study. Police Chief Mark Hummer said this reflects a $15,100
reduction from the original contract. Hummer expects the rest of the study will be finished by a local
firm. The township, Millbury, Walbridge, Rossford and Northwood are exploring a shared dispatch center.

• voted to buy a 2015 Ford Crew Cab pickup truck with four-wheel drive for $27,315 from Bauman Ford,
Genoa. It will replace a 1994 Suburban used by the fire department.
• approved buying four plow angle cylinders from Tom Newell Sales, Upper Sandusky, for $2,247. They will
go on the snow plow on the 2002 dump truck.
• renewed the annual LexisNexis subscription for $2,103. The CD provides current legal information of the
Ohio Revised Code, attorney general opinions, and others, and is used by all departments.
• hired MJ’s Snow and Landscape, Port Clinton, for $1,450 to sweep 17 miles of designated curb streets
once a month in June, August and October. As part of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mandate, the
township must have a storm water management and implementation plan, which requires the street sweeping.

• authorized City Auto Radiator, Toledo, to repair the cemetery backhoe for $850.
• changed the next meeting to May 7 at 5:30 p.m., due to the primary election on May 6.
• heard March department reports. The road department had 40 hours of overtime for a March 2 storm.
Supervisor Dan McLargin said for the season, the department logged 1,264 hours on the road with 17,601
miles and used 5,511 gallons of gas. This compares to 236 hours, 4,022 miles and 1,750 gallons in the
2012-13 season. Police made 23 arrests and issued 46 citations; Rossford had 378 calls, Lake had 344,
Walbridge got 114 and Millbury had four. Medic 50 EMS had 105 calls and fire had 107. The cemetery had
13 burials. Zoning issued one permit and took in $75.
• went into a 45-minute executive session to discuss real estate. No action was taken.
