MILLBURY – A decade-long custody fight and grievance against several county officials spilled over into a
Lake Township meeting on Wednesday.
Dan Prewitt, Millbury, asked the trustees to investigate Police Chief Mark Hummer for how he handled a
custody dispute.
"In my opinion, he did unlawful acts," Prewitt said during the audience portion of Wednesday’s
trustees’ meeting.
He said Hummer should have left Prewitt’s 11-year-old granddaughter in his custody, instead of removing
her from the Lake Township home. The girl reportedly would not go with law enforcement officials and was
lodged in the juvenile detention center.
"You should look at this intensely," Prewitt said.
"It sounds to me like he did his job," responded Trustee Chairwoman Melanie Bowen.
Prewitt’s son, Andrew, was also at Wednesday’s meeting, sometimes walking close to the trustees’ chairs
and staring intently at Hummer.
The trustees’ solicitor, Phil Dombey, said the Prewitts’ complaint would be investigated.
"You will have your day in court," he said. "These are allegations like any lawsuit.
Anybody can sue anybody for anything."
A September Sentinel-Tribune article noted that Andrew Prewitt created a mailer alleging Wood County
Juvenile Court Judge Dave Woessner was covering up child abuse in the case.
Another mailer went out last week targeting Hummer and Wood County Prosecutor Paul Dobson, showing a
photo of Adolf Hitler, and asking if county officials are resorting to Third Reich tactics.
The custody fight between Andrew Prewitt and the mother of his daughter has been ongoing since 2004;
Prewitt has written an online book chronicling his take on the dispute.
A July 2013 judgment entry regarding earlier portions of the case written by Woessner said Prewitt’s
"rationale that his efforts are needed to protect (his daughter) from a seemingly endless number of
allegedly corrupt, unprofessional, and biased individuals and entities in this case – basically every
entity or party that has disagreed with his position – simply is not true and stands as a sad excuse by
(Prewitt) to pursue his ongoing litigation."
A woman in the audience on Wednesday asked why Hummer would not be relieved of his duties during the
investigation.
"It will go through the proper channels," Bowen said.
