Lake Twp. debates porta-pot at park

MILLBURY – A new Lake Township park has proved to be so popular it might need a Porta Potty.
At Tuesday’s meeting, trustee Chairwoman Melanie Bowen said she has received several calls from residents
who would like a restroom at Moline Meadows Park, which was dedicated in September.
“The original intent was this was going to be a neighborhood park (with no restroom),” Bowen said. “The
thought process was it was just a neighborhood thing and you would run home.”
Apparently, though, the park has become a popular picnic area.
Bowen said, based on restroom prices from the township’s other two parks, it would cost about $80 a month
to put a portable toilet at Moline Meadows.
Some residents at Tuesday’s meeting, however, said the park’s neighbors may not be too happy about the
look and smell of a portable bathroom.
“We don’t have to do anything, but when you start getting phone calls you have to have the discussion,”
Bowen said.
Trustee Jeff Pettit, who lives in Moline, volunteered to do some more research.
The trustees may also apply for a grant that could fund a permanent restroom there.
Also at the meeting, the trustees:
• Took the final official action to place a 1-mill fire levy on the Nov. 4 ballot. The five-year levy,
which expires Dec. 31, generates about $209,000 a year for salaries and equipment.
• Set a July 15, 6 p.m. zoning application request hearing for East Suburban Animal Clinic. Dr. Gary
Holfinger is requesting a zoning change from R-2 residential to B-1 neighborhood commercial for 2.89
acres adjacent to the clinic.
• Accepted a $4,250 state EMS grant for 2014-15 to be used for education and equipment purchases by the
fire department.
• Approved purchasing asphalt from Asphalt Materials Inc., Oregon, for $5,000, to be used for road
repairs.
• Renewed the “I am responding” subscription used by the fire department for $800. The system is
coordinated with the firefighters’ pagers and lets dispatch know who is responding to an emergency. If
there aren’t enough reporting firefighters, the department can call for mutual aid.
• Accepted a $150 donation from the Hirzel Family Reunion for the cemetery.
• Accepted the donation of a horse head sculpture for Friendship Park.
