Lake board and classified employees have new contract

MILLBURY - Lake School District's secretaries, bus drivers and playground monitors are getting a raise.
At Wednesday's meeting, the Lake Board of Education approved a three-year contract with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees, effective July 1 through June 30, 2016.
Board President Tim Krugh said the contract mirrors raises given to teachers last month. They are 2.27 percent this year, 2.25 percent in 2014 and 1.95 percent in 2015.
OAPSE also includes custodians and cafeteria workers. There are approximately 50 classified staff members at Lake, said Superintendent Jim Witt.
In other business, the board accepted the resignation of Assistant Principal Dolores Swineford.
Witt said Swineford left to be a school improvement specialist for the Educational Center of Lake Erie West, formerly the Lucas County Educational Service Center.
Witt said Swineford's new position paid $22,000 more a year than her job at Lake.
Krugh said Swineford will continue to live in Moline with her family. "They really made her an offer she couldn't refuse," he said of the ESC.
In June, Swineford, who was also the preschool principal at Lake, was give a three-year contract and a $51,500 annual salary. She had been the Walbridge Elementary principal before that building was closed and sold.
Science teacher Katie Beard was hired to replace Swineford. She was given a one-year, $53,000 contract.
"We're very, very fortunate to have someone of her caliber taking over at the last minute for Dolores," Witt said.
Also at the meeting, the board:
Hired teachers Jason Schober, science, and Jacqueline Meier, business.
Heard the new, extended learning space at the high school was completed on time and opened for classes on Tuesday.
Increased the daily pay for substitute teachers from $70 to $75. Krugh said this equals the rate paid by the Eastwood and Northwood school districts.
Heard Witt report that senior David Henninger has been appointed president of Leadership Toledo. "This quite an honor for our community," Witt said.
• Went into executive session to discuss compensation of employees and negotiations. This was expected to be for administrative salaries, with possible action taken at the September meeting, Krugh said.
