LIME CITY – A kitten is being credited with saving the lives of a Perrysburg Township family from a fire
that destroyed their manufactured home Monday morning.
"They had a kitten, that unfortunately perished in the fire, but it was scratching at the face of
one of the daughters," said Perrysburg Township Fire Chief Tom Brice of the incident.
Fire crews were called at 6:31 a.m. to Perrysburg Estates, in the 23000 block of Lime City Road, on the
report of a manufactured home fire.
Mutual aid was requested from Perrysburg City and Rossford fire departments, and a medic unit was
additionally called from Middleton Township.
Upon arriving on-scene, Brice said "there was heavy smoke and fire coming from one of the trailer
windows."
The mother and three children were home at the time, he said; the father was at work.
"Everyone got out. A couple people had some smoke inhalation but they were treated and released at
the scene."
He said there were smoke detectors in the residence, but they were not functioning, and indicated that
the kitten, who awakened one of the girls in the residence, saved the life of the family.
The family also kept hamsters, which perished in the fire as well.
The blaze reportedly began in a bathroom on the premises, in the area of a water heater.
"The fire was confined to the bathroom and the void space in the roof, but there was smoke damage
throughout the trailer," said Brice.
He said the cause of the fire is currently undetermined, and that the structure was a total loss.
The Red Cross is currently assisting the family.
Crews remained on-scene for roughly 2 1/2 hours.
