Ohio Governor John Kasich appealed to the younger crowd Monday when he cracked a joke on music star Kanye West while addressing Buckeye Boys State delegates.
After taking the microphone from Dan Willis, a state government consultant for Buckeye Boys State, Kasich said, "I took that mic just like Kanye did, huh?"
The joke, which was in reference to West's behavior at an awards show in 2009, drew laughs from the roughly 1,200 delegates at Bowling Green State University's Stroh Center.
Instead of rapping the rest of his speech like the music artist he poked fun at, Kasich spoke to the delegates on what makes a good leader.
"Leadership isn't being voted into anything - but that is part of it. But the definition, in my opinion ... is the willingness, as I like to say, to walk a lonely road," Kasich said.
"Some of the greatest leaders are those who can see the future," he said.
And when you are leading to the future, Kasich said, "Sometimes it's pretty darn hard to get people to follow you."
He called on the delegates to "stand up and stand out."
"I am a believer that every single person in this auditorium ... has something that has been planted in them, in you, to make you special," Kasich said.
"You were created to do very special things," he said.
And not everyone is destined for public office, he said. Some of the special things the delegates are destined for, Kasich said, may not be very "public" at all.
They could be a researcher in a lab finding the cure for a disease; an entertainer bringing joy to others; or an educator who has the opportunity to change lives.
"Dig down inside of yourself," Kasich said. "And try to think about what your purpose is.
"We are all counting on you. You are the next generation. You are next up at the plate," Kasich concluded.
