To expand and create new youth sport offerings, the Bowling Green Parks and Recreation Department will host its inaugural Youth Sports Fundraiser Dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Bowling Green Community Center.
Gregory Kelser, a First-Team Academic All-American, member of the Michigan State Spartans' 1979 National Championship team, fourth overall pick in the 1979 NBA draft, former Big Ten Network broadcaster and current lead analyst for Fox Sports coverage of Detroit Pistons basketball, will serve as keynote speaker. Kelser is also the godfather of Tomica Stone, wife of BGSU assistant men's basketball coach LaMonta Stone.
"He is the perfect speaker for the type of event we want to do," said Eric Fletcher, sports specialist for BG Parks and Recreation. "The message he is going to deliver will be on the importance of youth sports. I think he will put together a great message."
Funds raised from the event will go toward new equipment, coaching and training materials and offering more specialized youth camps.
"We are always looking to add new programs and expand our existing programs," Fletcher said.
"We try to make all of our youth sport programs very affordable, but we also want to enhance the quality of the programs and ensure the kids have updated equipment."
Doors for the event open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. provided by The Whitehouse Inn.
Tickets are $30. Also available are "Elite 8" tables for eight for $300 and "Final Four" tables for four for $150. Proceeds will benefit the Youth Sports programs.
Free autograph and photograph opportunities with Kelser, raffles, an auction and a 50/50 drawing will also be available. Prizes include Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds tickets and an autographed Detroit Tigers photograph.
