Three area groups are teaming up for the 16th annual "Clean Your Streams" volunteer event on Sept. 15. The Wood County Solid Waste District, Wood County Engineer's Office and the Partners for Clean Streams organization are hosting the event. Volunteers are needed to clean up miles of stream banks all over the lower Maumee River watershed. There will be two kickoff locations in Wood County this year, one at Friendship Park/Lake Township Administration Building and one at Carter Park in Bowling Green. The cleanup takes place during the morning with an appreciation picnic to follow. All participants receive a T-shirt and lunch. Groups are encouraged to register online at www.PartnersForCleanStreams.org. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with site cleanup to follow. All volunteers must attend the 8:30 a.m. orientation to receive a cleanup location assignment. Other kickoff locations in the metro-Toledo area include the University of Toledo Law School, Monroe Street United Methodist Church, Olander Park Open Air Shelter, Oregon Municipal Building, Washington Township Hall, Teamsters Local 20 Hall. Sidecut Metropark Maumee Rotary Shelter House and International Park Gazebo. Every year, hundreds of volunteers around the world gather to remove trash internationally. Last year, 726 volunteers spent three hours cleaning up 25 miles of streams and rivers in the metro-Toledo area. They pulled 15,315 pounds of trash including 122 tires and 781 garbage bags of trash from the Maumee River, Ottawa River, Swan Creek, Duck Creek and Otter Creek.
