To honor local firefighters and first-responders, and to raise awareness for the American Red Cross of Wood County, the agency will be hosting its annual Fire and Ice event from 7 to 11 p.m. on Feb.17 at The Clazel in downtown Bowling Green. This is the third year for the event, which raised $25,000 in its first two years. "We started the event as an opportunity to have an awareness fundraiser for the Red Cross of Wood County," said Chris Diefenthaler, director for the American Red Cross of Wood County. "We also wanted to recognize our local firefighters and first-responders and how the Red Cross partners with these agencies when we are helping people after disasters," she said. "A lot of don't people realize that relationship." Back again this year will be the celebrity bartender contest featuring local firefighters. Firefighters will be teamed up with Clazel staff and will help serve drinks. The "celebrities" will compete to see who can bring in the most tips. Tips are collected in the firefighters' boots. The winner is given a trophy and bragging rights. Rossford Fire Chief Jim Verbosky was last year's champion. New this year will be a jewelry box key raffle. Keys will be sold for $25 each and will give participants a chance to open up a clear jewelry box with a $2,500 diamond necklace inside of it. A wine bottle raffle, silent auction and a photo booth will also be a part of the evening. A leaf blower, grass trimmer, jewelry, gift baskets, tickets to the Toledo Walleye and Mud Hens are among items available for bidding on. Appetizers and desserts from local restaurants and live entertainment by the Bourbon Street Band are also planned. Also during the night, a video presentation, highlighting the work of five local Red Cross volunteers who were deployed to various disasters around the country in the last year, will be shown. The volunteers were deployed after the tornadoes in Alabama and Joplin, as well as for Hurricane Irene in North Carolina and flooding in Mississippi. "Not only are we here helping in our own backyards, but we are also helping people all around the country who are affected by disasters," Diefenthaler said. Money raised from the event will go toward general operations for the Wood County chapter. Diefenthaler said in the event's first year, $3,000 was raised and 130 people attended. The second year saw a tremendous increase in funds raised with $22,000 and an attendance of 275 people. This year, the goal is $25,000. And, she said, only 300 tickets are being sold and she expects a sellout. Tickets are $25 each or two for $40. They can be purchased by calling (419) 352-4575 or by stopping by the Red Cross office at 150 Gorrell Ave., Bowling Green. Diefenthaler advised not to wait until the day of the event to buy tickets as she is expecting a sellout. |
