The 2012 Wood County Fair will be rocking with all the redneck girls like Gretchen Wilson, as the country music star headlines the annual concert.
The concert is set for Aug. 4 at 8:30 p.m. Dave Nietz, entertainment chairman for the fair, made the announcement Thursday at the monthly senior fair board meeting.
Wilson burst onto the country music scene in 2004 with her signature hit “Redneck Woman,” for which she won a Grammy for Best Country Female Vocal Performance.
Her chart-topping song includes the line, “I’m a redneck woman, I ain’t no high class broad.” Wilson, however, has proven otherwise. She has distinguished herself in her music career and with her advocacy for adult education.
Despite all her success she said there was still a void in her life, a goal of going back to school to finish her education. Until the age of 34, she was one of the millions of Americans who hadn’t finished high school. A dedicated mother, it was important for Wilson to earn her diploma not only for herself, but to prove to her 8-year old daughter, Grace, the importance of education. When she received her G.E.D. her friend and mentor, fellow musician Charlie Daniels, was a guest speaker at the graduation ceremony.
Wilson has since become an advocate to help spotlight the funding needs of adult education programs and the adults on waiting lists hoping to further their education. She spoke to a Congressional subcommittee about the need for continued funding. She traveled to Washington, DC to accept a 2009 National Coalition for Literacy Leadership Award at a reception at the Library of Congress, which recognizes individuals and/or organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to improving literacy and raising awareness of adult literacy in the United States.
Wilson has also distinguished herself by launching her own record label Redneck Records, and has written some of her own songs.
She has charted more than a dozen songs on the Billboard country charts including five which have cracked the top 10. In addition to “Redneck Woman,” a song she co-wrote with John Rich, she has hit the top 10 with “Here for the Party,” “Homewrecker,” All Jacked Up,” and “When I Think About Cheatin.’”
Other popular songs include “California Girls,” and “Come to Bed,”  a duet with Rich. “Work Hard, Play Harder,” was a song she co-wrote with Vicky McGehee and Rich.
In addition, as an author, her first book, the autobiographical “Redneck Woman: Stories from My Life,” landed her on the prestigious New York Times Best Seller List.
“When it comes to my career,” she says in her Website biography, “I get involved on a personal level in everything that counts. I’m involved in the writing, recording, producing, mixing, and promoting of the music, down to which photos we pick and how the lyrics are laid out on the paper. I’ve been very lucky that way from the beginning in that the people at my label, when it came down to it, have trusted me with my gut on the music.”
Wilson has also been active in charitable work. She has performed in clubs and small theaters to raise money for organizations like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network.
Wilson believes in keeping everything real and down to earth.
Ticket prices will be the same as last year including the front 10 rows on the track in front of the stage priced at $27.50; seats for the remainder of the track are $25, with grandstand seating at $20.
Fair officials are still looking at possibilities for an opening act for the concert. Tickets are expected to go on sale in early April.
At the meeting it was also announced that Richard King, the board secretary and fair manager has been selected as the District 1 director for the stage.
Much of the meeting consisted of board members sharing details and ideas from the recent state convention for all of Ohio’s fair boards.
