The Wood County Fair will expand to eight days next summer running Monday to Monday. On Thursday the Ohio Department of Agriculture released the official dates for the 2012 fair season, with the Wood County Fair approved to run July 30 through Aug. 6. The Senior Fair Board had sought the extra day after learning the availability of the extra date due to Lucas County Fair moving earlier in the season. Fair manager and secretary Dick King confirmed the longer fair schedule on Friday. King said members of the board have been holding scheduling meetings in anticipation of the expected approval of the dates by the state.
While still months away, the board will likely hold several more special meetings to hammer out the schedule of events before bringing up the schedule for final approval at a monthly board meeting. King said all the details will take time and most things have not been finalized. It is nearly certain that the Junior Fair Parade and the crowning of the king and queen will be held on that first day, July 30. With the Tuesday night of fair week opening up with that move, harness racing will likely move to Tuesday night. The last day of the fair has traditionally been a slow day for many of the merchants and vendors. That day is dominated by the annual livestock sale and the closing demolition derby leaving few patrons strolling the midway. The tentative plan would keep the sale and the derby on the closing day. The big difference would be no gate admission being charged that day with concessionaires allowed to open at their discretion. There would still be admission charged for the derby at the grandstand. King indicated the board is currently leaning toward keeping the concert on Saturday night; however, with Wednesday opening up, it is possible that a concert or other entertainment could be booked into that slot. Often promoters will offer better prices for acts during the week than the same act would fetch on a weekend. It is very possible that the truck and tractor pulls will remain on Thursday, the cheerleading may remain on Friday and the combine demolition derby likely to be held again on Sunday. The fair manager said nothing is official as the board discusses various possibilities and looks at all the ramifications of overhauling the entire fair schedule.
