PERRYSBURG - The Ohio Department of Development is planning to send auditors to embattled solar firm Willard and Kelsey after the company missed payment on a $5 million loan in the past month. Katie Sabatino, spokesperson for the ODOD, said Tuesday that the issue relates to incentives "from the department, including a loan that they have missed payment on just this past month." The agency is "just making sure that they are utilizing those funds." The payment on the loan would have been approximately $109,000. She said that the ODOD discovered that Willard and Kelsey could not make the payment via the automatic withdrawal system used to take out the money. "There were insufficient funds," she said. "And the company was supposed to be getting us some updated banking information. They claimed they switched banks. We still have not received that updated banking information." She noted that Willard and Kelsey had stated that they would be creating 400 jobs. Thus far, that target has not been met.
The solar panel company, located on the east side of Ohio 25 just south of Levis Commons, has faced a number of financial woes in recent months. The Ohio Air Quality Development Authority recently announced it would be "closely monitoring" the company after it failed to make its last two quarterly payments on another $5 million loan. Earlier this year, the ODOD called the firm to hold a status check consultation with them over the restructuring and payment of their loans.
