Initial plans for the demolition of the Ridge Elementary property have begun, Bowling Green City Council was told Monday night.
Municipal Administrator John Fawcett said the city closed the purchase last week and has set about disconnecting utilities. "We are in the process of removing electric, water, sewer and gas service in preparation for taking down the building," he said.
Council agreed to purchase the school property for $22,500 several weeks ago, demolish the building and use the property as green space.
Fawcett said asbestos and demolition experts are being invited to inspect the structure to prepare cost estimates for the project. No date has been set for demolition to begin.
Council also:
• Heard Council President John Zanfardino announce that the Dec. 2 council meeting has been cancelled. Council will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 16 and Dec. 30. Zanfardino said in recent years council has held a special meeting in late December to handle year-end financial matters. This change is an effort to avoid a need for a special meeting and give plenty of advance notice.
• Approved legislation renewing a contract with the Bowling Green Convention and Visitors Bureau and increasing the payment of revenue from the hotel-motel tax from 55 to 60 percent.
• Recognized the organizers of Project Homeless Connect and St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where the event was held. Jennifer Kephart, a co-chair of the steering committee, gave council members a written report of the event. "It was a day where hope was realized," Kephart said. Mary DeWitt, co-chair of logistics for the church, said "We can't wait for next year. It was an awesome event."
