Cookware company Calphalon, which is planning to invest $11.3 million in a new distribution center in Wood County, has been tentatively granted a tax break by the county commissioners. The commissioners voted Thursday to give the company 100 percent abatement of real property tax for 15 years - as long as the state grants the company a relocation waiver. The waiver is needed because Calphalon is planning to close two sites in Toledo and consolidate them in the new Wood County site. The new distribution center is proposed north of Bowling Green on Middleton Township property, on the east side of Ohio 25, just south of the UHF trucking site on Ohio 582. The 366,000-square-foot warehouse will employ 83 people presently working at the Toledo sites. Another 33 new jobs are expected to be created over the next five years at the new distribution site and the existing Calphalon manufacturing plant in Perrysburg Township. "This project is very important to Calphalon because it allows them to retain the Perrysburg Township manufacturing jobs," Wade Gottschalk, associate director of the Wood County Economic Development Commission, explained to the commissioners. The new distribution center property will be owned by InSite Real Estate, and leased to Calphalon. "There is room for expansion as well," said Eric Pedersen, project manager director with InSite. "That was an important piece of the puzzle." The decision to locate in Wood County came after a five-year study by Calphalon. "We had several options," said Cory Niekamp, manager of engineering at the Calphalon plant. "Our goal is to consolidate the facility to one location," Niekamp said. Niekamp said the new distribution center, with its automated conveyor system, is "not just a warehouse." In fact, the projected personal property investment in equipment is $5.4 million. "This is a pretty big commitment for us," he said. And it's a commitment to Calphalon's sole manufacturing location off Buck Road in Perrysburg Township. "The goal is to stay there," Niekamp said. The county commissioners were pleased with the plans to stay put and expand in the county. Commissioner Tim Brown noted that the people who started the Calphalon company were "home-grown," from Perrysburg. "We're elated that you chose Wood County," Commissioner Jim Carter said. The enterprise zone agreement is contingent upon the state approving a relocation waiver. Gottschalk told the commissioners that Toledo Mayor Mike Bell was not protesting the company's relocation. All local entities affected by the tax break - Eastwood and Penta school districts, plus Middleton Township - have signed off on the deal. The Calphalon move has already been supported by the Ohio Tax Credit Authority which, through JobsOhio, has awarded a 45-percent, five-year Job Creation Tax Credit to the project. Company officials hope to start digging on the site July 26, occupy the building on April 1, and start shipping products there on June 1. |
