At a moment when much of the world is erupting in turmoil, the topic of Bowling Green State University's 2013 Nakamoto Peace Lecture is "Building a Culture of Peace."
Steven Leeper, former director of the Hiroshima Bomb Museum and Peace Park and former chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, will give a free public talk Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Gish Film Theater at Hanna Hall.
Leeper has spent about half his 65 years in Japan, but never more than six years at a time. He has a master's degree in clinical psychology, but turned to management consulting before completing his education as a psychologist. Arriving in Hiroshima in 1984 with interest in neither peace nor politics, he worked as a consultant in the automotive industry.
He is one of the few English teachers to serve on the board of directors of two U.S. subsidiaries of Japanese companies. For three years he edited Japan Related, a magazine for American employees of Japanese companies.
Becoming a peace activist in 1998, he co-founded Global Peacemakers Association in Hiroshima and Atlanta, then began working for Mayors for Peace in 2002. He became the first non-Japanese chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation in 2007. Leeper stepped down from that position at the end of March 2013 and will begin teaching at Hiroshima Jogakuin University this September.
The annual lecture is sponsored by the BGSU Foundation Inc., Hiroko Nakamoto Peace Studies Fund, the BGSU Peace and Conflict Studies program, Asian Studies program and International Relations Organization.
