A long-time auto dealership is going big and bold by the end of the year.
Al
Smith Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram will move from its corner on North Main
Street and Dill Avenue to a four-acre site on North Main at Newton Road.
Jim Smith, son of the dealership’s namesake, said the hope is to have the project completed by the end of
the year.
Al Smith’s has been family owned and operated since 1964.
The
new site will be three times bigger than the current dealership, and
provide five-star service to customers, said Smith. It will also provide
double the inventory, he added.
It will include all services from showroom to repairs and maintenance.
The payroll also should double, up to 30 employees, Smith said.
He hopes to expand the vehicle selection to include the Ram ProMaster cargo vans and light trucks.
“It’s an opportunity for us to make an investment in the community that has supported us for so long,”
said Smith.
The move is “a benefit for the economy as well as us and Bowling Green. It’s a win win for everyone.”
Smith said it is unclear at this point what they will do with the abandoned site.

He
said the family looked at several sites before choosing the one on the
outskirts of the city that offers exposure, utilities and easy access.
“This one seemed the most beneficial to what we were trying to accomplish.”
Having display space on the highway with everyone going by at 60 or 70 mph, “it’s not the most
advantageous.”
