BRADNER - One of the county's parks may be getting an addition. Wood County Park District Director Neil Munger updated the Park Board of Commissioners at their meeting Monday on efforts to purchase a nearly 10-acre addition for the Bradner Preserve, located along U.S. 23. The board met at William Henry Harrison Park, Pemberville. Munger said that discussions regarding the land, a private stretch located within the center of the preserve and connected to Route 23 by a lengthy driveway, began in October with its late owner, Wayne St. Clair. His widow, Lynn, continues to be interested in selling the property to the park district. The Bradner Preserve, at over 400 acres, is the largest of the county parks. The land includes a home, built in 1955 and renovated since then, an unattached two-car garage, and a small fishing shed, as well as large pond. St. Clair had also constructed wetland areas, vernal pools, and trails on the property, which could be integrated into the present offerings at the preserve.
The pond, Munger said, could be used for fishing programs, and the home itself could also be used for programming. "Neat area, beautiful grounds, ties right in with the parks," Munger said. The cost of the entire property would be in the neighborhood of $289,000. However, Munger pointed out that the Park District had planned to build a visitor center on the Bradner Preserve, which alone would have cost $250,000. This purchase would render that planned construction unnecessary. A purchase agreement is to be drawn up for the land, and the document is slated for a vote at the board's July meeting. The July meeting will take place at the Otsego Park Stone Hall.
