PERRYSBURG - A young boy with autism was found safe Friday after he reportedly wandered nearly a mile away from his child care group.
According to a police report, at 10:27 a.m. Perrysburg police were notified of "a small child running barefoot" near Ohio 199 in the area of the Perrysburg Post Office in the southern part of the city.
Seven minutes later, a further call was received that a little boy, approximately 3 years old, was running southbound on Louisiana Avenue toward Eckel Junction Road.
The child, who was shoeless and "appeared not to be able to hear," according to the report, was found and stopped by a passerby, who waited for police at the corner of Southwood Drive and Cedar Court in the Southwood subdivision, near Louisiana Avenue.
The Perrysburg boy was recovered uninjured there by police and taken back to the police division.
Through a series of checks, it was learned that he had wandered away from a child care group at the YMCA, located at 210 E. South Boundary St. - nearly a mile from where he was recovered.
According to the report, a caregiver there indicated that the children in the care group had been divided amongst several "free play" stations in the room at the YMCA, and the boy "is autistic and often moves from station to station."
The boy's absence was discovered and the building and grounds were searched for him. The search was about to be expanded when they were contacted by the police.
The boy was later picked up by his father.
A copy of the report was to be sent to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services' Licensing of Child Care Providers section, as well as Wood County Children's Services.
