The last time Harvey Taft saw his daughter bald was 38 years ago.
"Not since she's been born," Taft said as he watched his daughter, Anita Alfaro, have her shoulder-length blond hair buzzed Monday afternoon.
Alfaro, manager at the McDonald's restaurant on South Main Street in Bowling Green, had her head shaved by employees who met her fundraising challenge to help build a new Ronald McDonald House in Toledo.
"I told them if they raised $4,000, I would buzz my hair," Alfaro said. "When I made this deal, we still had $1,500 to go."
When the challenge was made, Alfaro doubted her staff could come up with the $4,000 in just a month and a half.
"No, I did not," she admitted Monday as she enjoyed the last few minutes of life with a ponytail.
"I'm a little nervous, but it's for a good cause," said Alfaro, who has worked at McDonald's for 22 years.
So after the lunch rush was over, Alfaro put a barber smock around her neck, and sat down in a chair behind the restaurant. As drive-thru customers placed their orders, and employees peeked out the back door, Alfaro went from blond to bald.
"We're all here to see this event. It's been a great motivator," said Larry Ball, owner/operator of the McDonald's in Bowling Green, North Baltimore and Fostoria. "The crew and the customers really responded."
Off-duty crew members, family and fans snapped pictures as Alfaro lost her locks.

McDonald's employees begin shaving Anita Alfaro's head.
"I'm real proud of her. She's done a great job," said her dad, of Jerry City.
Some employees took turns making swipes with the clippers. But the bulk was trimmed by crew member Candy Jones, who has experience shaving her fiance's hair.
"We honestly were worried about getting $4,000 bricks" for the fundraiser, said off-duty employee Autumn Lewis. "This is awesome. We're super excited."
Alfaro's brother, Dean Taft, watched from the crowd. "You look like me," shouted the primarily bald brother.
Of course, her brother did his part to cause the buzz.
"I've been donating for a while," when stopping by the restaurant for breakfast, Dean Taft said. "I'm proud of her."
In addition to admiration, Alfaro also got some good-natured heckling. She was called "G.I. Jane" and "Curly" of the Three Stooges. Others cautioned her to apply sunscreen, while some asked to touch her new hairless head.
"At least you won't be sweaty," said Alfaro's 8-year-old daughter, Linda.
The mother of the McDonald's manager watched with others as Alfaro went under the clippers.
"I thought she was crazy at first," Linda Taft said. "She said, 'Mom, I made a promise. So I've got to do it.'"
