(Updated at 9 p.m. 1-5) Not even a recession or double-digit unemployment can slow down Ohio’s political fundraising machines.
Most campaign strategists expect Democrats and Republicans will break campaign spending records this year in their bids for the governor’s office and an open U.S. Senate seat.
The money race got rolling Monday evening when former President Bill Clinton headlined events in Perrysburg and Youngstown for Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, who is seeking a second term. Next week, former White House adviser Karl Rove will visit Ohio to raise money for the county Republican Party in Toledo.

Tickets for Clinton’s Perrysburg appearance ranged from $1,000 to $10,000 and were in high demand, forcing the event to move from a private home to a private club. The media is not being allowed to cover Clinton’s visit to the Carranor Hunt and Polo Club located at 502 E. Second St., Perrysburg.
