Dr. Kenneth W. Borland Jr., provost and vice president for academic affairs at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, has been named Bowling Green State University’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. The appointment is effective Aug. 15.

“This is a critical leadership role for the university,” President Carol Cartwright said. "Ken will work closely with me to build on BGSU’s reputation and help us achieve even higher levels of academic excellence and student success. We’re excited to have him on board.”

As provost, Borland will be responsible for all academic programs at BGSU, including oversight of the colleges, enrollment and research. The position is second only to the president in leadership at the university.

“BGSU is a great fit,” Borland said. “I’m looking forward to helping students succeed and supporting our faculty in their research. That combination is vital to our success. I’m delighted to have this opportunity to help lead BGSU into its second century.”

He was named ESU’s provost in 2004, and earlier was an associate provost at that university. He served as interim president for five months in 2008. He holds the rank of professor in the areas of leadership and interdisciplinary studies.

Borland was also an assistant vice provost at Montana State University-Bozeman and served as an associate and assistant professor of higher education and adult learning at Dallas Baptist University.  He began his academic career at Pennsylvania State University.

He holds a doctoral degree in adult and higher education from Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree in education and religion from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a bachelor’s degree in theology from Toccoa Falls College.
