Dr. Janet Parks was honored Thursday at Bowling Green State University for being "a major supporter of the University Libraries' collections, employees and services." The distinguished professor emerita in the School of Human Movement, Sports and Leisure Studies was presented with the 2012 Friend of the University Libraries Award. She "has made the University Libraries a permanent priority in her life," Sara Bushong, dean of the University Libraries, said in presenting the award in front of library staff. Parks is a former president of the University Libraries Friends Board and a current member of the Library Advocates Board. In 2004, she launched a project to raise funds for the construction of student group study spaces on the seventh floor of Jerome Library. The project "has made a tremendous difference in the lives of BGSU students," Bushong said.
As president of the Friends Board, Parks was instrumental in promoting a collaborative partnership between the Friends of the Libraries and the School of Art to provide an annual sculpture award to a deserving student. She also led the effort to name it the Dr. Beth Casey Student Sculpture Award. As a member of the advocates board, she led the effort to establish a coffee cafe in Jerome Library, and suggested "Thinkers" as the name of the cafe. Throughout her involvement on the Friends Board, she "shared her enthusiasm for the University Libraries with others." Bushong praised Parks for leading Authors and Artists events, developing outreach initiatives to increase membership and supporting the library's activities honoring BGSU's centennial. She "is always willing to advocate on behalf of the University Libraries to the university administration."
