Business on Bowling Green's South Main Street has undergone a commercial renaissance of sorts.
Over the last year, several businesses have located to Bowling Green's south end, filling in previously vacant storefronts.
"It's just so exciting to see additional businesses locate to our south side of town," said Earlene Kilpatrick, Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce director.
The area, Kilpatrick said, is strategically situated on Ohio 25 just off Interstate 75 and U.S. 6. It also caters to commuters and residents on that side of town.
"Any retailers, restaurants and entities that add to our business base is a positive for our economic base," she said.
"Business shapes our quality of life. It creates jobs. It strengthens our tax base."
T.J. Maxx is the latest retailer to locate to The Shoppes on South Main across from Walmart. The grand opening is scheduled for Sept.9, according to the store's website.
Messages seeking comment from a T.J. Maxx spokesperson were not returned.
Kilpatrick said there are other potential businesses which may locate to South Main, but she could not disclose specifics.
Staples plans to move from its current location to The Shoppes by January.
Staples and T.J. Maxx will join Petco, Maurices, Sally Beauty Supply, Shoe Sensation, Dollar General, Time Warner and Banner Mattress on the strip.
In the same plaza, three stores: Radio Shack, Great Clips and Urgent Care have opened their doors in the former Movie Gallery site.
Also on the south end, Family Video has taken over the former Blockbuster location. In that same strip, a martial arts studio has assumed some of the space formerly belonging to the Hallmark store.

This is great news....Lets hope that the Chamber's endorsed Mitty R and his team of thugs don't catch wind of this. Remember we used to have a "Stage Store" in the same spot.

I applied last summer at several of these businesses, even Banner and Time Warner to no avail. The Shoe Sensations store that was previously there is gone as well....sometimes I wonder if places like Banner or that Zenith store ever hire, tough to find work in this town, and am still waiting to hear back from Family Video. Sigh....guess I better start looking for another car sooner than later. If only to replace my walking around and around late into the night and early morning hours during the summer, just to kill time, lol. Hey, a job would help too!

Stage is only one of the names that a large clothing company go by, they also had a store downtown where Panara is, I worked there until I found out from the Mgr. that these smaller stores are tax deduction for the mother company based out of Texas, they also had a hidden credit card co. in an area upstairs not used by the store.

Finally. Those of us in the South End get some shopping choices. Altho not high end, they're still better than the previous empty buildings. Even Huntington Bank closed it's South End branch. After much complaining, they put back the ATM, but they placed the posts incorrectly so now you have to either have stretch arms or get out of your car to transact your "drive-thru" experience. With Rtes. 25 and 75 access so close to us, why do we get all the discount stores (see list in article) and the Mall, such as it is, is located nowhere near an exit. How about moving the mall to the south end, upgrading the stores to bring in more upscale stores and making it a real destination, not just a place to go for movies and drinks? Sorry for the rant, but tired of being the "poor" end of town.

lol...that stupid Butt Hutt is there now, Joan. You guys' side of town is really sad, lol. I walk through there almost every night a few times or at least once and see it over and over again. That end of town REALLY needs more to do, and it is so busy all the time!

I'm sorry, but since I am a smoker, we needed a small shop like Butt Hutt. But was we really need are real restaurants like Applebees or Olive Garden. For being a college town, it is sad that we have to go to Toledo or Findlay just to get a good bite to eat!!

lol...and I miss Westfield in Toledo. But because many students have vehicles to drive there, the mall in BG will slowly die most likely.

Earlene-this is fine and dandy but we need more chain set down restarants and try picking up the Mall. That is a ghost town, The only thing that keeps that place going is the Theaters. Have you ever been out there on a Tuesday morning at 11 a.m.? Nothing! I know we need more pizza shops, Mexican eateries, bars and hair salons. I know you are trying but Perryburg, Maumme, Toledo and Findlay look better and alwasys has.

So what is the story with Woodland (s)Mall? The candy shop and Verizon kiosk were the latest two business' to close. One owner is telling me the place will shutter in November if the company that bought the place out of foreclosure, doesn't make a payment to their bank.

I LOVE TJ MAXX. The clothing is high quality, same stuff you get at the mall; it's just last season's and therefore discounted. I'm so glad we have one in town, and that I no longer have to use gas driving to Spring Meadows.

Now if they'd just bring Gabriel Brothers (Gabe's) to the area. Same modus operandi--name brands, off season, low prices. (Nobody looking at me can tell whether the Kenneth Cole boots I'm wearing came from a high-end store at $130 or from Gabes's at $30. These stores do NOT sell "junk".) Closest Gabe's is in Mansfield or Mentor (one of those M towns) and it's just too costly to drive there regularly.

Now--how does one get a job at any of the stores listed in the article? I see they've opened, but not once have I seen a want ad in the Sentinel.

Dead right Jean, it is like that everyday, not just Tuesday. Compared to Levis Commons, our fine dining restaurants are a joke. When I had a car and lived in Toledo, the restaurant scene was GREAT. I dined at places like Elephant Bar, Mancy's, Sakura steakhouse, etc, and mingled with local professionals, academians, and business owners, even got a job offer once that probably would have paid well. Toledo has a great night scence, amongst other venues, and NYC was a blast recently. What I am saying is BG does not have enough to appeal to us college students who YES are indeed thankful for what the city offers us and the residents, but would like to see a little more of what I have described. Uh...this also includes alternative stores that fall within the law, as well as perhaps other gatherings and venues. More art shows would be great.

Yes, real restaurants!! I know if I had money, I would turn the old Pharm into a Roller Rink for our town kids. They have nothing to do, other than run the streets!! Anyone willing to propose or help our kids would be great!!

No Matt, they never hire. They employ robots. Maybe you should work on your resume.

Also Matt comparing Bowling Green to a city of any size be it Toledo or NYC is laughable. BG is barely 20,000 residents during parts of the year.

We do need a steakhouse or family restaurant in this town. A Cheddars restaurant would do great here. Cheddars offer's just about everything on their menu and at a great price. They have a large menu, serve large quantities of quality food. Cosmos is a very nice and fairly affordable place to eat and Bob Evans is nice but you don't get large quantitie of food and they are very high priced. We need another option of affordable dining with excellent quality and quantity of food that both college students and the common town people can afford and enjoy.
