Bowling Green will hold its 21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day program Friday afternoon. Bowling Green State University President Dr. Carol Cartwright will be the featured speaker for the 1:30 program in the atrium of the Wood County District Public Library, 251 N. Main St. Shades of Brown, formerly known as the Harmony and Soul Singers, who were a big hit at the 2009 program, will make a return appearance. The family group includes Dr. Angelo Brown and his wife, Sheila, their sons Xavier and Vitto and cousin Lionel. The parents have been writing songs and performing for 15 years. Four years ago the couple added their sons and cousin and began leading the praise team at Turning Point Church in Bowling Green. Sheila is associate director for programs in the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Angelo is the associate director for the AIMS program, both at BGSU. Xavier and Vitto are students at BGHS and Lionel is an employee at Staples in BG. Xavier has written and co-produced two songs for a CD the group is planning.
The song the family wrote and sang at last year's celebration that received a standing ovation was titled " Beautiful Sunset" and will be included on the CD. The group has performed original songs for a variety of programs on and off campus including the BGSU annual Kwanzaa celebration, Breakfast of Champions and others. The family also includes a daughter Carla and two nieces who have recently come to live with them, Ellexia and Kelise. Also on the agenda is presentation of the Drum Major of Peace Award, as selected by the city's Human Relations Commission, sponsor of the event. The 2009 award was presented to the Bowling Green High School Model United Nations program and Nick Messenger. Among previous recipients are Akiko Jones and Joan Gordon. The award is so named to pay honor to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a sermon preached just a few months before his death. The recipient receives a plaque and has their name engraved on a permanent plaque that is kept on the wall of City Council Chambers in the City Administrative Services Building. Cartwright was named BGSU's first woman president Jan. 6, 2009, after serving as interim president since July 2008. She served as president of Kent State University from 1991-2006 and earlier was vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of California at Davis and dean for undergraduate programs and vice provost at The Pennsylvania State University. Cartwright earned master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.
