Bowling Green's Board of Public Utilities Monday agreed to seek an engineering firm to handle several upgrades at the city's water treatment plant on the Maumee River.
While work in recent years has been aimed at improving water quality and capacity, the new list of projects will cover plant upgrades in some areas that date to the original 1951 construction.
Early estimates are that the work will cost $800,000 to $1 million and will probably be done in 2014 and 2015.
There was $350,000 placed in the 2013 budget to replace rapid sand filters and the under drain system (which date respectively to 1951 and 1968). Director of Utilities Brian O'Connell told the board that since an engineering firm has not been selected, that project will not get done this year and funds will be reappropriated in 2014.
Other projects on the list are to update a backwash pumping station that was installed in 1990, with an estimated cost of $150,000; replace and relocate the fluoride feed system, $350,000; replacement of monitoring and automation controls, cost unknown; and replacement of the main circuit breaker and switch gear due to age and condition, $5,000.
O'Connell said he will come back to the board once an engineering firm has completed estimates, before moving forward with the work.
The board also:
•    Agreed to ask city council to amend its storm sewer ordinance to allow municipal utility employees to enter properties to make sure storm water is not being drained into sanitary sewer lines. O'Connell said city ordinances already allow such inspection for other municipal utility issues.
•    Held an executive session to discuss property issues, then adjourned without taking any action.
