BG school board renews contracts

The Bowling Green Board of Education has renewed the contracts of several administrators.
Contract extensions were given to Scott Seeliger, high school athletic director, through 2016; James
Lang, Conneaut Elementary principal, through 2017; Donna Zielinski, special needs coordinator, through
2017; and Dawn Dazell, part-time human resources administrator, through 2017.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting, Pam Varty, physical education teacher at Crim Elementary, and Dr. Pam
Bechtel, an associate professor in the School of Human Movement, Sport, and Leisure Studies at Bowling
Green State University, voiced their concern about BGHS allowing students to opt out of physical
education.
The board last month approved the opt-out as long as students participate in interscholastic athletics,
marching band or cheerleading for at least two full seasons while enrolled in the high school.
The option starts with the class of 2015.
This frees up time for students to take additional electives.
Bechtel said the district is confusing physical education with physical activity, and she thinks
districts are doing this to eliminate phys ed teachers.
She continues to lobby in Columbus to eliminate this option.
The waiver is outlined by the Ohio Department of Education and is up to individual boards to adopt.
Varty, who has been with the district 20 years, pointed out when she started, there were nine phys ed
teachers. There are now five.
The board also:
• Gave continuing contracts to Kristine Brickner, Kyle Hackenburg, Shannon Kellough, Jordan Opfer and
Marcie Wahba.
• Accepted $405 in donations from various residents to the Bryce Christensen Support Volunteerism Fund;
and $30 to the middle school library in memory of Patti Rish’s mother.
• Heard a presentation from Crim Elementary teachers on efforts they are making in math and reading
intervention.
• Learned 170 youth have preregistered for kindergarten this fall.
• Learned that rather than send home fliers with students, a new flier board is now available on the
district’s web site. Go to www.bgcs.k12.oh.us and click on the push pin in the top right corner.
• Confirmed fifth-grade camp this fall will be from Sept. 15-19 at Heartland Outdoor Environmental
Education School.
