One of the first signs of Spring 2014 for Bowling Green residents will be orange construction barrels at
the Haskins and Poe road intersection.
"Construction will probably start by mid-March, if we have a normal spring," City Engineer Troy
Sonner told BG’s Board of Public Utilities Monday evening.
Sonner said the contract has been awarded to Gerken Paving of Napoleon at a cost of $642,000. The
engineering estimate was $852,000.
Five bids were received for the project, all of which Sonner said Tuesday would have been awardable.
"We will be holding a pre-construction conference with the contractor and then a public meeting to
share the project scope and schedule," Sonner said. The public meeting date will be announced.
Sonner said most of the work will be focused on Haskins Road (Ohio 64) north and south of the
intersection, with the addition of left turn lanes.
The project includes new light poles, new masts for traffic signals, count down pedestrian crossing
signals with push buttons, sidewalk and curb work and LED street name signs, similar to those installed
on the North Main Street project.
The contract completion date is July 12.
The intersection project, along with a separate project scheduled for 2015 to repave Poe Road from Grove
Street to Mitchell Road, is being funded through the Transportation Improvement Project fund. Eighty
percent of the cost comes from federal and state funding and 20 percent from city funding.
Sonner expects the paving project will be bid late this year for construction to start in spring 2015 and
be finished by July 2015. The engineer’s estimate for the 2015 work is $1,144,500, which covers 1.9
miles.
Work from Grove to Lafayette will be largely repaving, while west of that there will be more extensive
work to build up the roadbed, Sonner said.
The city’s 2014 budget contains money for both projects.
