Two Bowling Green High School friends have promised to keep the mud-slinging to a minimum as they both compete for Buckeye Boys State governor next week. Declan Wicks and Jared Kubylski, incoming seniors at BGHS, say they both want to win, but plan to get elected the right way. "It's a friendly competition. He wants to win and so do I," Kubylski said. "We are going to run against each other, but if one of us gets knocked out, we will try to get other people to vote for the other." "If one of us gets outs, I am sure we would back the other," Wicks agreed. The pair met freshman year in band. "We are good friends. Other than joking around, there is not much mud-slinging," Wicks said. On a given year, usually about 10 candidates run for BBS governor. The pack is narrowed down to two on Tuesday following a primary, one candidate for both the Federalist and Nationalist parties. From there, the more than 1,200 delegates will vote in the general election to select this year's governor. The 2012 Boys State governor will be inaugurated on Wednesday during a ceremony at the Stroh Center. He will be sworn-in by Associate Supreme Court Justice Robert Cupp.
Kubylski said he wants to be elected governor "to make a difference and have the opportunity to speak to the class." "I am going to do a lot of campaigning, talking to people and getting to know people," he said. Wicks has a similar approach to winning the governorship. "Listening to people and finding out what they want," he said. "I feel like I can do a lot of good and bring a lot of good ideas to the governor's position," Wicks said. "I feel like I can serve the people well." Kubylski plans to pursue a career in the military and is attending several leadership seminars this summer. He just got home from a seminar at West Point. The son of son of Michael and Jeanne Kubylski serves on student council at BGHS and is also involved with cross county, track and choir. Wicks is in involved with Model United Nations, drama and calculus club and marching band. "I love diplomacy and politics. Trying to work with people and solve things," Wicks said. He is the son of Kelly and Laura Wicks.
