BG foundation gives grants

The Board of Trustees of the Bowling Green Community Foundation recently announced the awarding of
$23,990 in grants to nine Bowling Green area non-profit organizations for 2012.
The grant distribution area includes the Bowling Green School District and the Bowling Green zip code.
The amount distributed in each grant ranged from $500 to $5000.
This year’s BGCF grant recipients and their projects include:
• Northwest Ohio Center for Excellence in S.T.E.M. Education (BGSU), $1,250 – To help sponsor a festival
for school age children and their parents on the BGSU campus to inspire interest in science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics.
• Historical Construction Equipment Association (Bowling Green), $1,200 – To provide funds to archive and
create DVD’s of historical records and movies of former Wood County stone quarry operations some dating
back to 1883.
• Wood County District Public Library, $2,240 – To purchase 70 sets of books and 70 magnetic alphabet
sets for the library’s Every Child to Read program.
• Montessori School of Bowling Green, $4,700 – To develop an outdoor trail that can be used for
cross-country running events, hiking, jogging, etc for school and community use.
• Bowling Green Office of the American Red Cross, $5,000 – To develop an educational program to help
families and individuals create an individualized disaster preparedness plan.
• BGSU Athletic Department, $4,600 – To work in conjunction with Big Brothers & Big Sisters of
Northwest Ohio in providing tickets and T-shirts to 200 local youth to attend the NCAA Women’s
Basketball Tournament.
• Bowling Green Pee Wee League, $2,000 – To provide funds to help pay team fees for children from
families in financial stress and to assist with adding additional fencing at the ballpark.
• Assistance Dogs of America, $2,500 – To fund the training of a therapy dog to assist victims of human
trafficking at the Daughter Project in Bowling Green.
• Wood County Humane Society, $500 – To help implement a trap, neuter, and release program for stray pets
in the Bowling Green area.
Of the $23,990 awarded, $21,094 came from the BGCF general endowment. In addition, $2,006 came from the
Marsh Family Fund, and $890 from the Town and Gown fund. In addition to the grants listed above, the
BGCF also gave another $2,000 in scholarships to Bowling Green High School seniors.
The Bowling Green Community Foundation was established in 1994 as a project of Leadership BG. Since 1997,
$234,734 has been distributed through 252 grants to 149 different Bowling Green community non-profit
organizations.
Funding to support the BGCF endowment has come from cash donations as well as bequests, life insurance,
estates, and charitable remainder trusts. An annual golf outing is also held each year to support the
work of the foundation.
The Bowling Green Community Foundation is currently conducting its annual fund drive. The foundation is
very dependent upon the proceeds from this annual fund drive to continue the expansion of the endowment.
