The death of a 3-month-old baby boy Saturday night continues to be investigated. The Wood County Sheriffs Office Monday afternoon identified the child as Carter J. Steinmiller. The parents are Rebecca and Brian Steinmiller of 18330 Brim Rd., Bowling Green. According to the Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn, his office received a 911 call regarding the unconscious baby. One of the officers in the department was nearby and arrived on the scene within a minute and began CPR treatment. The child was not responsive and was taken by ambulance from his Plain Township home to Wood County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The sheriff’s department is cooperating with both the prosecutor and coroner’s offices regarding this matter. Wasylyshyn said they are awaiting the autopsy results. That autopsy is being conducted by the Lucas County coroner’s office which will be forwarded to Wood County.
“There are some things that rose our suspicions so that’s why we are waiting on the coroner’s results,” the sheriff said. “We’ll go from there.” It is the second death of a child under investigation in Wood County in the last few months. Bowling Green Police Division detectives are investigating the death of 2-year-old Emma Zehnpfennig, of Bowling Green. She was taken to Wood County Hospital on Feb. 22, was unresponsive and transferred to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where she died March 1. According to the Lucas County coroner’s report, the autopsy revealed “abusive head trauma” and her death was ruled a homicide. The report also indicated signs of previous abuse. Deputy Coroner Dr. Diane Scala-Barnett told the Sentinel-Tribune, her injuries were “inflicted, they are non-accidental.” BGPD has also turned over a separate case of an infant’s injury over to the prosecutor’s office. On April 26, a 5-month-old child was found to have severe head injuries after being taken to Wood County Hospital for treatment, suffering from what was reported as seizures. Upon examination, the child was found to have substantial head injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo. That child, a resident of Clough Street, Bowling Green, was also transported to Toledo for treatment, and has since been taken into the custody of Wood County Jobs and Family Services, Children’s Services Division.
