An oval gazebo measuring 10 feet by 18 feet was dedicated at the 7 p.m. ceremony on Monday at the Millbury Veterans Park. PHOTO BLOG Councilman Clarence Wilburn said the village paid for some of the memorial, which was also funded through a grant. He said the gazebo will be a place to reflect. Killed in the tornado were Ryan and Mary Walters and their son, Hayden, who were in their Millbury home during the storm. Their daughter, Maddie, survived and will be at a 5K race on Saturday to raise funds for a scholarship in the family's name. Also dying in the storm were: Bailey Bowman, 21; Kathleen Hammitt, 56; and Ted Kranz, 46. Irwin Welling, 87, died the next month from injuries sustained when the tornado destroyed his home. The Welling family announced plans last month to rebuild on the site, just east of the Lake Township Administration Building, which was leveled in the tornado. Lake High School was also destroyed as the tornado tore down Ohio 795. The new high school will open for classes in August. |
