TOKYO (AP) — Toyota kept its position at the top in global vehicle sales for the first quarter of this year, outpacing rivals General Motors and Volkswagen.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday that it sold a record 2.583 million vehicles in the January-March period, putting the Japanese automaker ahead of Detroit-based GM at 2.42 million and Volkswagen of Germany at 2.4 million.

Toyota's first quarter sales rose by more than 6 percent from the same period the previous year. GM's sales grew 2 percent, while Volkswagen's added nearly 6 percent.

Toyota finished first last year with a record 9.98 million vehicles in sales, remaining the top-selling automaker for a second year in a row. General Motors Co. finished second and VW third.

Toyota is targeting sales of more than 10 million vehicles this year. No automaker has sold that many in a year. Toyota officials say being No. 1 is not that important, and they want to be No. 1 in customer satisfaction.

Europe recovery shows signs of strengthening PDF  | Print |  E-mail

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Business activity in Europe has risen to its highest level in three years as a once-shaky economic recovery gains speed.

The Markit survey of purchasing managers, a closely watched gauge of business activity, climbed to 54.0 in April from 53.1 in March. That's the highest reading since May, 2011. Anything over 50 indicates expansion.

Analysts said Wednesday's figures, which cover both services and manufacturing companies, showed that the moderate recovery was showing increasing strength in the 18 countries that share the euro.

Alarmingly low inflation of only 0.5 percent and high unemployment have raised fears the rebound was too weak to sustain itself and would require more stimulus from the European Central Bank.

The eurozone grew by a quarterly rate of 0.2 percent in the fourth quarter of last year.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Microsoft is expanding a program that gives schools the ability to prevent ads from appearing in search results when they use its Bing search engine. The program, launched in a pilot program earlier this year, is now available to all U.S. schools, public or private, from kindergarten through the 12th grade.

The program is meant to create a safer online environment for children, but also promote use of Bing, which trails market leader Google.

Microsoft Corp. is also giving away a first-generation Surface tablet computer to schools where community members sign up to use the ad-supported version of Bing outside of the school.

The program is tailored so that 60 parents and friends who do 30 Bing searches a day can earn their school a Surface in a little over a month. There is no limit on the number of Surface devices a school can earn.

Microsoft has some unsold inventory of the first generation Surface in stock after booking a large write-down on the devices last year.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Three Florida men who federal authorities say stole about $80 million in prescription drugs from an Eli Lilly warehouse in Connecticut have been charged with conspiracy and theft, the U.S. attorney's office announced Tuesday.

The 2010 theft from the warehouse in Enfield — believed to be the largest theft in the state's history — included thousands of boxes of Zyprexa, Cymbalta, Prozac, Gemzar and other drugs, authorities say.

Two other men previously were charged in the case. The U.S. attorney's office Tuesday identified the three new defendants as Yosmany Nunez, 41, also known as "El Gato," of Southwest Ranches; Alexander Marquez, 40, of Hialeah; and Rafael Lopez, 49, of Miami.

Nunez's attorney declined comment; an attorney for Marquez did not immediately return a message left for comment.

Yoel Molina, an attorney who represented Lopez in Florida said, "The evidence will support our position he's an innocent man."
