Pizza Hut manager fired over Thanksgiving dispute

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — Pizza Hut has offered to rehire themanager of a northern Indiana restaurant
who was fired over his refusalto open up on Thanksgiving Day.Tony Rohr said he has worked atthe Elkhart
restaurant since starting as a cook more than 10 years butwas told to write a letter of resignation after
his refusal. He said hedeclined in a meeting with his boss and instead wrote a letterexplaining that he
believed the company should care more about itsemployees."I said, ‘Why can’t we be the company that
stands upand says we care about our employees and they can have the day off?’"Rohr told WSBT-TV (http://bit.ly/1bZovDT ).Rohr said he was thinking about
the other workers at the restaurant."Thanksgivingand Christmas are the only two days that they’re
closed in the wholeyear, and they’re the only two days that those people are guaranteed tohave off and spend
it with their families," he said.Pizza Hut’scorporate office issued a statement Wednesday saying it
respects anemployee’s right to not work on the holiday and that the store owner hasagreed to reinstate
Rohr."This was clearly an unfortunatesituation, and we are very upset by what has transpired in
Elkhart," thecompany statement said. "While the choice as to whether a restaurantshould be open or
closed on a holiday is handled at the local level byour independent franchisees, we feel strongly that this
situation couldhave been avoided."Rohr said he hasn’t decided yet whether to accept the job
