Malaysia eases auto curbs to woo foreign makers

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s government unveiled
a new auto policy, offering incentives and easing curbs on the
production of small, energy-efficient cars as it vies for investment
with neighboring rivals Thailand and Indonesia.
Trade Minister
Mustapa Mohamad says Monday that new manufacturing licenses will be
issued for carmakers producing energy efficient vehicles.
The
government previously only issued manufacturing licenses for vehicles
with engine size of 1.8 liter and above to protect national car makers
Proton and Perodua.
Mustapa said the new auto policy aims to make
Malaysia a regional center for energy efficient vehicles, with a target
of raising total production to 1.25 million vehicles by 2020 from around
570,000 vehicles last year.
