LONDON (AP) — Apple Inc. says it played no role in the National Security Agency's alleged efforts to hack the iPhone, explaining that it was unaware of a recently revealed program apparently aimed at turning the best-selling smartphone into an improvised listening device.

The Cupertino, California-based, company said Tuesday it had never worked with the NSA to deliberately weaken its products, promising that it would "defend our customers from security attacks, regardless of who's behind them."

Apple's statement follows the disclosure by privacy advocate Jacob Appelbaum of a leaked document describing an NSA-designed "software implant" intended to turn an iPhone into a pocket-sized informer, secretly recording audio, stealing files, and harvesting contact information.

The revelation was one of series of disclosures which have rattled the NSA in the past six months.

Revlon said it is leaving China and cutting 1,100 jobs as part of a cost-cutting measure.

Most of the jobs cuts will be in China.

Revlon's operations there make up only 2 percent of the company's sales, which have been declining. Global sales fell 1.3 percent to $1.02 billion in the nine months through September, compared with the same period in 2012. Revenue dropped 3.5 percent to $166.8 million in Asia during that time.

The departure will save the makeup company $11 million a year, Revlon said Tuesday in a regulatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Anheuser-Busch sued over 'hold my beer' videos PDF  | Print |  E-mail

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A Montana-based craft brewer is suing the world's largest beer-maker, alleging that popular YouTube videos for Bud Light violate its trademarked phrase, "Hold my beer and watch this."

Big Sky Brewing Co. sued Anheuser-Busch this month in U.S. District Court in Missoula, Mont. The company says it has used the slogan since at least 2004, and has a trademark.

At issue are three videos on Bud Light's official YouTube site created by actor John Krasinski, best known for playing Jim Halpert on NBC's The Office, and his business partner. The videos debuted about a month ago and have nearly 5 million views.

Bud Light's marketing vice president, Rob McCarthy, says there is no trademarked use of the phrase. He said other videos and jokes use the same or similar wording.

Mexican sales tax hike seen as boon on U.S. border PDF  | Print |  E-mail

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (AP) — Mexican license plates are common in parking lots of shopping malls in U.S. border cities. They will be even more familiar after Mexico raises its federal sales tax in border regions to match the rest of the country, say merchants and shoppers.

The increase to 16 percent from 11 percent, which takes effect Wednesday, has sparked large protests on the Mexican side of the border. Facebook pages with secessionist tones have generated about 200,000 "likes." Thousands have signed petitions to challenge the tax hike in court.

The Mexican government says the two-tiered tax structure, which was introduced decades ago to make border cities competitive, is no longer justified. Others say the increase may backfire by driving more shoppers north of the border, harming the economy and raising less tax revenue than anticipated.

"We don't compete against the rest of Mexico, we compete against the American economy," said Juan Manuel Hernandez, president of the Tijuana Business Coordinating Council, an umbrella group of business chambers.
