CHICAGO (AP) — The deadline has passed, and so too the surprise grace period, for signing up for health insurance as part of the nation's health care law.

Now what?

For those who were able to navigate the glitch-prone and often overwhelmed HealthCare.gov website, there's still work to be done to make sure success online leads to actual coverage come the new year.

The first step experts recommend is to call your insurance company and double-check they received your payment.

What if you missed the Christmas Eve deadline and still want insurance in 2014, as the health law requires of most Americans? You may be without health insurance for a month, but you can still sign up for coverage that will start in February.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — It's a wrap for NASA's Christmas Eve spacewalk.

Two astronauts are safely back inside the International Space Station after replacing a pump in a crippled cooling line on Tuesday. Preliminary testing shows the new pump to be working well. NASA expects to have the station's cooling system restored by this weekend, with all equipment running again.

Astronauts Rick Mastracchio (muh-STRACK-ee-oh) and Michael Hopkins braved a mini-blizzard of noxious ammonia as they hooked up the new pump. But in the end, they triumphed in their second spacewalk in four days.

It was only the second Christmas Eve spacewalk ever. Mission Control says it's the best Christmas ever.

Anonymous donor gives $650K for Nebraska bridge PDF  | Print |  E-mail

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Three years after a flood wiped out a 100-year-old bridge spanning the Elkhorn River in Neligh, residents of the small northeastern Nebraska city received a festive surprise: an anonymous, $650,000 donation to rebuild the structure.

The city received a check from the donor's Chicago-based attorney last week for use on the condition that residents never try to uncover the donor's identity. If they discover the name by accident, city officials must stay sworn to secrecy.

A flood damaged swept away a section of the steel-truss bridge in 2010 and devoured a chunk of the river's south bank. Residents tried to raise the money for repairs, but collected only a few thousand dollars.

Mayor Jeri Anderson says she was amazed when she learned of the donation.

U.S. mortgage applications tumble to a 13-year low PDF  | Print |  E-mail

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of Americans applying for mortgages has fallen 63 percent since a May peak, reflecting a cooling housing market and higher borrowing rates.

The Mortgage Bankers Association says applications fell a seasonally adjusted 6.3 percent last week from a week earlier. Applications are now at a 13-year low.

The drop-off follows a 1 percentage point increase in mortgage rates from historic lows last spring. The average for a 30-year mortgage is 4.47 percent, according to mortgage buyer Freddie Mac.

Home sales stalled and began to fall once rates steadily increased after May. That ended a year and a half of rising mortgage applications since the housing bust.

Higher borrowing costs have made homes less affordable. Rates could rise further as the Federal Reserve scales back its economic stimulus.
